Changing your lifestyle from couch potato to healthy and active is no simple task. It is a lifestyle change that usually entails losing some weight and becoming more physically fit. In the process it is easy to make a bunch of little mistakes, that when added together, can derail your whole plan.
I am speaking from experience when I tell you that I have literally made each of these mistakes at one time or another. So that you can learn from my mistakes and hopefully avoid them yourself, below you will find them in a nice little list.
Without further ado and in no particular order I present to you …
5 Weight Loss Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making … Plus How To Fix Them
1.)Not Cleaning Temptation From The Kitchen aka the kids/hubs snacks
This one is very difficult for a couple different reasons. Reason one being that many people (myself included) hate the thought of wasting food and money by just throwing out perfectly good food. Even if that food is in no way healthy and is actually acting as a temptation to you. It still just goes against the grain to toss it away. Solution? I am a fan of giving it away to either friends, coworkers, or a local food bank. The food is put to good use plus that brownie mix is no longer staring me in the face every time I open the pantry. WIN WIN
The second reason it is difficult to clear out kitchen temptations is living with others. That brownie mix may be off-limits for you right now (drat!) but the hubs might be totally looking forward to those 4th of July frosted brownies (drool…). This is doubly true if you have kids or are living with kids in the household. Kids are like mini garbage disposals, eating everything in sight, the more sugary the better. Normally those little gummy snacks wouldn’t cause a moments temptation, but week 3 into a lifestyle changing diet and they might just be what sends you into monster craving mode. Solution? If the people in your household are all family then, hopefully, they will understand and support your decision to change your eating habits for the better. If so, ask them if they would be willing to get on board with you and have a family eating habit change for the better! If that is out of the question, segregating the worst offending temptations to a corner of the pantry or fridge that you can pointedly avoid might be the next best option. Unless of course you are willing to go rogue and just toss it all out while everyone is sleeping … good luck with your own personal WWIII come breakfast next morning.
2.)Not Fueling Your Workout
While cleaning temptation from your kitchen is something I can’t over stress, you don’t want to purge everything but the celery and apples. In fact, if you want to lose weight and get healthy through a combination of diet and exercise you MUST eat the proper foods and amounts to fuel your workout. If you don’t, your body will turn to using burning muscle for energy instead of fat! That is the opposite of what you want to happen.
This is such an important aspect of losing weight that so many women trip up on that I wrote a whole post on it not long ago that you can find here:
In brief, the post goes over how you need a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats in your pre and post workout meals/snacks in order to keep you energized and allow your body the nutrients it needs to recover from a hard workout. These ratios will change depending on the type and intensity of your workout. That means depending on whither you are doing a light cardo workout day or a serious HIIT day you will need to make sure you get different amounts and types of nutrients into your meals.
3.)Hating Your Workout Regime … Or Even Just Being Bored With It
This is a HUGE stumbling block for so many people on a weight loss journey. They fall into the trap of thinking that in order to lose weight they have to do (insert random) workout. Usually this workout is some form of cardo like jogging or the treadmill.
THIS ISN’T TRUE!!!
If you hate or find your chosen workout regime I can almost guarantee that you won’t stick with it long-term. MAYBE, if you are just a dedication beast you will keep with it long enough to meet your weight loss goal. Hats off to you.
But will you really keeping doing it after that?
If not, will you simply quit working out and allow the weight to creep back on?
This is why you NEED to love your workout regime. If you think that is impossible then you are mistaken. It is absolutely possible for you to find a way to get active and keep active for the rest of your life doing something you enjoy. It may involve creativity, compromise, and stepping out of your comfort zone but it is absolutely possible.

4.)Not Scheduling A Workout Like Work
Time is a very valuable commodity today as our world just seems to be getting busier and busier. In all the hectic madness we tend to call our days it is incredibly easy to find multiple excuses to skip a workout. Like super-duper easy.
But if you want to be physically fit and not simply lose weight physical exercise is mandatory. Something that is mandatory is a priority in my book and should be treated as such. That means scheduling a workout with the same intention and priority as you would schedule a meeting with someone important at work or a doctor’s appointment.
It is not something that you can treat as an afterthought. If you say to yourself you’ll “get to the gym” when you have some free time in the afternoon I would almost guarantee that the free time disappears before gym time happens.
Just a fact of life in the kind of busy lifestyles we tend to make for ourselves.
Which is why you really do need to treat your workout like “real work”. Because in the long run, and taking into account your life long health, it really is that important.
5.)Not Allowing A Cheat Meal
I put this one on the list with a word of caution. It should be a weekly (not daily) cheat meal (not day). As I sit here writing this article some of my family are visiting one of my absolute favorite places … Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. In Gulf Breeze there is a restraint named Flounder’s Chowder House that serves literally THE BEST KEY LIME PIE ON THE PLANET. It is three layers of taste bud exploding awesomeness. I absolutely guarantee you that if I was with them I would be eating a piece of that pie without question or regret.
Now, for me, that is a splurge that I don’t get often and so when I do I enjoy it to the fullest. It is absolutely ok to have splurges like those. You are not a machine that can function on one kind of food day after day after day. As you change your eating habits for the better you may find that you don’t crave all the sugary garbage you used to … Praise God! But don’t feel like a failure if you do and don’t deny yourself the foods you love, within reason.
That’s why I absolutely suggest that during your weight loss journey you allow yourself one meal a week to eat whatever you want. Plan it ahead and look forward to it! After you meet your healthy weight and physical goals you will have a little bit more liberty to tweek your cheat meal. That’s something to look forward to and plan for. By that time you should have the new lifestyle habits to know how to do it responsibly and with intention. Which is what we should all be doing! YAY KEY LIME PIE!!!
These mistakes are things that we all slip up on sometimes. So don’t beat yourself up if you’ve done one or all of them before. I know I have! I wrote these puppies down out of experience! All you have to do is learn from your mistakes, dust yourself off, and keep on pushing toward your healthy lifestyle goals. Remember, you’re not alone and it will be worth it in the end.
